Fractions
A series of innovative resources to help with developing an understanding of fractions and their equivilents. There are games suitable for children from KS2 (aged 7+) up, structured worksheets and also ideas for young and older students who are really struggling with this important mathematical concept.
Featured below are some of our favourite Fraction tackling resources: Games such as Fraction Action Lotto and Fraction Snap are a fun way to help children recognise fractions in different formats or fraction equivalents. In Lotto, fractions are represented both graphically and as an integer (whole number) ratio. 100% and 0.5 are added to the mix to stretch older children. The game can be played on two levels; either allow exact image matches only, or, for older children, allow equivalent fraction value matches as well. The Fraction Snap cards feature shapes divided into fractions, fractions of illustrated sets of items, fraction notation, decimal fractions and written fractions. The different card combinations help children recognise and understand fractions including equivalent fractions. Worksheets Plus is an outstanding series of mathematics worksheets aimed at English Year 4 and Year 5 level work but also excellent for older children needing remedial work. Author, Steve Chinn is most certainly the UK's most highly regarded expert on Dyslexia and it's effects on Mathematics abilities and Dyscalculia. Although Worksheets Plus have been written around the syllabus for Years 4 and 5, they are designed not to be age-specific in appearance. Thus they can be used for intervention for older students, especially as they cover many of the key topics needed for progress in numeracy. The 'Plus' refers to the guidelines given with each book as to the problems that each topic may create for a learner and an overview of the approaches that may be helpful in addressing these problems. The Worksheets have been designed to address one topic at a time, to be uncluttered and manageable and to help the development of maths skills and knowledge. Year 4 Book 1 and Year 5 Book 1 cover Fraction and Decimals and are suitable for use with advanced younger children through to older children and even adults.
